With various developments in the last 10 years from ROWE
(Results Only Work Environment), the GIG ecomony and more recently the Covid-19
virus, working from home is now very much part of our lives and part of the
future of work.
Below I share some tips to make working from home as
effective as possible.
Before you begin working from home make sure you create a separate work space which will
be “your office”. Make it comfortable, organised, with great internet
connection and set boundaries with other people living with you. Make sure you
have everything you need
within reach.

Next set your intentions for the week ahead. Breakdown your overall intentions into daily tasks. Create a routine from these tasks and write /draw it up so you have a visual reminder. This is very important to keep track of what you set out to do. Timings are critical too. Start times, end times: especially define when your day will begin and when it will end.

Day one working
from home:
In the morning do the same
routine as if you were going to leave your home and go to an office:
shower, get dressed, breakfast etc.
Repeat this everyday at the same time. This routine acts as a cue to get your "work mindset" activated.
- Use a timer with
a buzzer if you find yourself dawdling and getting distracted.
Get to your workspace and plan your day in hourly slots if you haven’t done so already. - Use a timer or some sort of reminder to alert you when each hour passes. Stop what you are doing and move onto your next task as soon as the timer goes off. This technique will keep you productive.
- Take breaks as you normally would do working in an office building. The norm tends to be a quick break mid-morning and mid-afternoon and 1 hour lunch break.
At the end of the day
review how you did and adjust
where you need to.
Important Note:
At some point in your 24 hours make sure you get some fresh air and direct sunlight (season permitting) and do some physical activity.
